Fabric can sense light, colors
Tuesday 21st December, 2004
MIT researchers reported they have created flexible fibers and fabrics that can not only sense light, but also analyze its colors.
Just as in the movie 'Honey, I Shrunk the Kids,' wouldn't it be wonderful if you could fabricate something on the macroscale, then shrink it to a microscopic size? asked Yoel Fink, the research team's leader. That's what we did, but the magic shrink-down apparatus we used is not a 'shrinking beam' from science fiction ... it's a furnace.
The team first created a cylinder, or preform, about 20 centimeters long by 35 millimeters in diameter and containing a low-melting-temperature conductor, a semiconductor and an insulator.
They then fed the preform into a tube furnace, where it was heated and drawn into a fiber that exhibits both electrical and optical functions.
These novel fiber structures offer a unique possibility for constructing an opto-electronic functional fabric, because the fibers are both flexible and mechanically tough, and can thus be woven, the researchers wrote in the Oct. 14 issue of the British journal Nature.
Interesting device applications follow not only from the ability to engineer the single-fiber properties, but also from the specifics of fiber arrangements into larger assemblies.

Scientists Develop Ultra-Clean Fabric
Http://feeds.bignewsnetwork.com/?sid=fb031ad97ffb2b37
Tuesday 21st December, 2004
S.C. scientists develop ultra-clean fabric
South Carolina textile researchers are developing a highly water-repellant coating made of silver nanoparticles that needs almost no cleaning.
The Clemson University work, presented recently during a North Carolina conference of the American Chemical Society, has resulted in a patented polymer film (polyglycidyl methacrylate) mixed with silver nanoparticles, which can be permanently integrated into any common fabric, including silk, polyester and cotton.
In the long run, it can save time and money by reducing expensive dry cleaning bills, researchers say. It is also environmentally friendly.
The coating doesn't actually clean itself, but it does resist dirt much better than other fabric treatments, said research team member Phil Brown, a textile chemist with Clemson University in Clemson, S.C.
The concept is based on the lotus plant, whose leaves are well-known for their ability to 'self-clean' by repelling water and dirt. Likewise, when water is exposed to the treated fabric, the dirt will be carried away more easily. You will still need some water to rinse away dirt and stains, but cleaning will be quicker and less frequent.

Trends in World Textile and Clothing Trade
Http://just-style.com/store/products_detail.asp?art=22968&lk=ewh220
World textile and clothing trade rose by 3.6% in 2002 as it recovered from the global economic slowdown, from the US recession, and from the impact of the terrorist attacks on the USA on September 11, 2001. Exports of textiles from Western Europe expanded by 9% to fuel the apparel industries in Eastern Europe while, in the reverse direction, clothing exports from Eastern Europe to the West grew by 6%. Similarly, 7% more textiles were shipped from North America to Latin America, although apparel exports in the reverse direction rose byonly 2%. Textile exports from Asia to North America recovered significantly but apparel trade fell slightly. Read more.
